The Royal Oak Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1873-1920>.

The hotel was described as being in Creswick Road in 1873[1] and in Howitt Street, in the Dowling Forest licensing district.[2][3] Assume it was on the intersection of these streets.

History[edit | edit source]
There was a railway incident near the hotel in June 1876:
The railway gate opposite the Royal Oak Hotel on the Creswick-road, was smashed this morning by the down Maryborough train.[4]
In July 1888 Sarah Kenyon wrote to the council:
From Mrs Kenyon, Royal Oak hotel, Creswick road, complaining of the state of the footpaths near the Royal Oak, and asking that a visit be paid thereto. —Referred to the east riding councillors.[5]
In February 1901 Sarah Kenyon advertised she was going to transfer the license to Hector Norman Wood:
LICENSING ACT 1890. NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR TRANSFER OF LICENSE. We, SARAH KENYON, of Ballarat, the holder of a publican's license for the house premises known as the Royal Oak hotel, situate at Creswick road, in the Licensing District of Ballarat, of which Sarah Kenyon is the owner, transferror, and HECTOR WOOD, of Ballarat, proposed transferree, do hereby give notice that it is our intention to apply to the Licensing Court for the said Licensing District on the seventh day of March, 1901, at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at City Court, for a TRANSFER of the said LICENSE from, the said Sarah Kenyon to the said Hector Wood. Given under our hands this eighteenth day of February 1901. SARAH KENYON, Transferror. HECTOR N. WOOD, Proposed Transferree. Witness—William Henry Oatway.[6]
In August 1904 the publican, Hector Norman Wood, was charged with having the hotel door open on a Sunday night:
BREACH OF THE LICENSING ACT. Before Mr W. Dickson. P.M., Mr T. Barry and Lieut.Col. Greenfield. J.'sP. The licensee of the Royal Oak hotel, Creswick road, Hector Wood, was charged with having his bar door open at 8 p.m on a Sunday. He pleaded guilty. Evidence was given by Sergeant Beckman, who visited the hotel on the night mentioned. The minimum penalty of £5 was imposed, and a second charge of Sunday trading was withdrawn.[7]
In April 1918, the hotel had formed a coursing club:
ROYAL OAK CLUB. The Royal Oak Club is putting forth a most attractive programme for this afternoon at the Royal Oak grounds. The stakes to be decided include Maiden Trophy (Terriers), Maiden Terriers (Stake), Open Terriers Stake. Supplementary Stake. Greyhound Stakes. Good lot of rabbits available. A special meeting of the club will be held at the Royal Oak Hotel, Creswick road, on Wednesday night next.[8]
Community Involvement[edit | edit source]
- In January 1894, two candidates for the Victorian Parliament, Mr. W. Anderson and Mr. Stapleton, held meetings at the hotel.[9]
- In December 1902 Charles Hamilton, a political candidate, used the hotel for a meeting.[10]
- In August 1915 the Ballarat Dog Owners Club were holding weekly meetings at the hotel.[11]
The People[edit | edit source]
- In December 1873 and 1875 the license was granted to John Kenyon.[1][12]
- In May 1890, Sarah Kenyon, publican, was called a witness in a court case.[13]
- In November 1898 the licence was transferred from John Kenyon to Sarah H. Kenyon.[2]
- In March 1901 the license was transferred from Sarah Kenyon to Hector Norman Wood.[14]
- In August 1904 the publican was Hector Norman Wood.[7]
- In February 1906 the license was transferred from Hector Norman Wood to William Henry Oatway.[15]
