History[edit | edit source]

In April 1936, a former resident, J. Ulysses Brown, wrote about the hotel:

In the early seventies Harry Pensom was murdered. A few minutes before Pensom was shot both he and his assailant had a drink together in the Royal Oak Hotel, Raglan-street. A short distance away near an abandoned shaft 400 feet deep, Pensom was shot, and the body thrown into the shaft. Detective Foster, the last detective in Daylesford, had charge of the case.[1]

John Tippett (also in 1936) recalled the hotel as being on the Glenlyon road.[2]

November 1899:

WOOD.—on the 4th November, at Melbourne Hospital. W. A. Wood, of the Royal Oak Hotel, Daylesford, the beloved husband of Rebecca Wood, aged 58 years.[3]

The hotel was delicensed and used as a boarding house. It was destroyed by fire on 1 February 1917:

Fire at Daylesford — A large fire occurred on Thursday night at the old Royal Oak Hotel, Daylesford, latterly used as a boarding house. There was a strong wind blowing and the whole of the building, of 14 rooms, was destroyed. Only a trunk was saved. L. Gay is the owner. Mrs Gay was carrying a kerosene lamp, which accidentally fell to the floor and exploded. The building was insured for £320 and the furniture for £80, in the London and Lancashire office. By error the "Argus" of Monday stated that the above fire occurred Kyneton.[4]
