He married Caroline Frances Ratcliffe on 20 February 1860 at St. Alipius Church, Ballarat. Caroline was the daughter of Catherine Brown and Frederick Royds Ratcliffe.

They had fourteen children including:

  • Charles Frederick Henry Hager, born 1861 in Ballarat East.[2]
  • Mary Helene Hager, born 1864 in Ballarat East.[3]
  • Arthur William Hagar, born 1866.[4]
  • Rudolph Thomas Hager, born 1867 in Ballarat East.[5]
  • Mary Didericke Hager, born 1868 in Smythes Creek.[6]
  • Christian Hager, born 1870 in Cardigan.[7]
  • Catherine Hager, born 1872 in Smythesdale.[8]
  • Clara Mary, born 1874.[9]

Hager took over the license of the Halfway House Hotel on Smythes Road in 1872. In September 1874, Hager transferred his license to the Criterion Hotel in Doveton Street, Ballarat.[15]. He held the license there for 25 years. In November 1899 Rudolf transferred his publican's license for the Criterion Hotel to his son Christian.[16] Hager continued to own the hotel.

Hager was the chairman of the trustees of the Lal Lal racecourse in 1882:

Tenders must be accompanied by six months' rent in advance and be sent in to the chairman of the trustees, Mr R. Hager, Criterion Hotel, not later than twelve noon, on Friday, the 5th of May. The highest or any tender not necessarily accepted. By order Wm. BUHLERT. Secretary.[17]

He retired into private life for a period of two years, but then took over the North Star Hotel in the same town, which he occupied up to his death in 1909.[1] His estate was valued at 3500 pounds.[18]
