Rudolph Thomas Hager was a grocer and publican in Ballarat, Victoria, <1888>.

History[edit | edit source]

Rudolph Thomas Hager was born in 1867 at Ballarat East, the son of Rudolph Sophus Hager and Caroline Ratcliffe.[1]

Hager married Elizabeth Gabbett, the daughter of Henry Gabbett, in 1884.[2] Gabbett was the publican of the Imperial Hotel in Humffray Street.

Hager had a grocery business in Bridge Street.

In December 1887 he was the victim of fraud:

Henry Lawrence Fitzsimmons, alias Arthur Leslie, alias Henry Clay, was placed at the bar in the Town Police Court yesterday, to answer two charges of forgery. Prisoner had been remanded from the City Court. The first case taken was one in which Fitzsimmons passed a cheque for £6 10s on Mr R. T. Hager, of Bridge street, purporting to have been signed by Messrs Charles Walker and Cos., auctioneers, of Lydiard street. The cheque was drawn on the Colonial Bank, and on presentation there it was marked “no account.” Mr Walker deposed that his firm had no account with the bank, and this testimony was supported by Mr James Widdows, the ledgerkeeper. The former stated that the signature on the cheque resembled that of the firm in some respects.[3]

Hager took over as the licensee of the Imperial Hotel after his father-in-law's death in 1887. In December 1887 he was elected as a member of the Ballarat Licensed Victuallers' Association.[4]

Hager's younger brother, Charles Hager, was later publican of the North Star Hotel in Lydiard Street.

Hager and his wife later moved to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, where they continued to operate hotels.[5] Hager died in Western Australia in 1934.[6]
