History[edit | edit source]

In December 1884 the police objected to the renewal of Daniel Darcy's license:

The license of Daniel Darcy for the Shamrock hotel, Dunnstown, was opposed by the police on the ground of the quarrelsome habits of the licensee and his family, and his consequent frequent absence from his licensed house. After hearing Mr and Mrs Darcy in explanation, the bench adjourned the application to the 8th proximo, to afford an opportunity for arrangements to be arrived at to ensure the satisfactory conduct of the business by the licensee.[2]

In December 1889 the police objected to the transfer of the publican's license:

In the case of the Shamrock hotel, the application was opposed by Inspector Parkinson, who stated that it was a notoriously conducted house, and the present applicant was too young and in his opinion, not fitted to conduct such a house. In granting a license, his Honor, cautioned the new licensee as to the manner in which he conducted his business.[3]

In February 1935 the publican, Austin Neville, was one of a number of Ballarat publicans fined £1 for having had men on the premises after hours.[4]

The hotel freehold was offered for sale in June 2023 for $1,200,000.[5]
