History[edit | edit source]

In February 1859, the hotel was destroyed by a large fire which destroyed several hotels, businesses and more than 20 houses.[3]

In 1866 a bagatelle table from the hotel was auctioned:

CHAS. DYTE will Bell by public auction, this day, at 12 o'clock sharp, at the Ballarat Hotel, late St. Nicholas Hotel, Main road, One Square Billiard Bagatelle Table, with 6 cues, pins, and balls, complete. Terms, cash.[4]

The People[edit | edit source]

  • In June 1858 the application for a license by Timothy Law was postponed for one week as he did not have his sureties present.[5] It was granted one week later.[6]
  • In July 1858, Timothy Lane was refused a night license on the grounds that it was not a first class hotel.[7] It was granted one week later with a caution:

Timothy Lane, St Nicholas Hotel, Main Road. Mr Walsh supported the application. Sergeant Larner said he had been told that gambling had been carried on in this house. Mr Lane said there was not a sixpence changed hands in the way of gambling one six months' end to another. Sergeant Larner said he had only heard of it. Bench warned Mr Lane that if the report were ever proved to be true he would be severely dealt with. There were other houses afflicted with a similar character. Application granted. [8]
