Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in Trawalla.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

In the will of the owner, Mark Barnes, the hotel was described as having 19 rooms in 1893.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

In April 1878 the publican, Mark Barnes is advertising:

WANTED, for Cash, DAMAGED GRAIN of any kind, Wavely Biscuits, or other dry food, by the ton. Mark Barnes, Trawalla Hotel, Trawalla.[3]

In March 1880 the hotel was damaged in a hail storm:

The thunderstorm on Saturday last was very light in Beaufort, but on the ranges between Beaufort and Sailors' Gully hailstones as large as pigeon eggs fell in large quantities. The Trawalla hotel was deluged with water, the hailstones knocking holes in the galvanised iron roof, and the water in the bar was two feet deep.[4]

The hotel's license was reviewed by the License Reduction Board in January 1912.[1]

The hotel's license was surrendered at the end of 1918:

At the end of the year the license of the Trawalla Hotel, Trawalla (which has been surrendered), expires. Mrs H. Jaensch (the licensee), and her husband, and family are likely to migrate to another part of the State. During their long residence at Trawalla they have taken an interest in many local movements, and their departure will be regretted by a wide circle of friends.[5]
