The Unicorn Hotel was a hotel at Gordon, Victoria, 1868-1893>

The hotel was in the main street of Gordon, next to the Catholic Church.[1]

The hotel was built and offered for sale with an adjacent shop in August 1868:

MONDAY, 10th AUGUST. THE UNICORN HOTEL, and Draper's Shop, GORDONS, Producing a Rental of £182 per annum. SAMUEL DEEBLE has been instructed to sell by auction, at the Corner Hotel, Sturt street, Ballarat, on Monday, 10th August, at Twelve o'clock. All that New Hotel and Shop (now finishing), situate and fronting the Main street, Gordons, opposite the new Masonic Hall, and adjoining tho Catholic Church. and Freehold. Title First-class. Full particulars may be had from the Auctioneer, 43 Sturt street.[1]

The publican was unsuccessfully charged with Sunday trading in January 1881:

Constable Deacon v Thomas Bohan, of the Unicorn hotel, allowing liquor to be drunk in his licensed house, at Gordon, on Sunday, 26th ultimo. Not sufficient evidence for conviction. The bench dismissed the case.[2]

An article on the original Gordon cemetery in 1917 mentioned one of the 75 graves was for John O'Keefe who "...poisoned himself at the old Unicorn Hotel..."[3]

The People[edit | edit source]

  • In December 1875, 1878 and 1879 the publican, Thomas Bohan, had his license renewed.[4][5][6]
    • In January 1881 he was charged with Sunday trading.[2]
  • In December 1884 and 1887 the publican James Rowett (1884) or James Rowell (1887), had his license renewed.[7][8]
  • In December 1892 John H. Hudson's application was postponed for one week as he had not lodged his license with the Clerk of Petty Sessions.[9]
