Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel opened in 1861, and was built next door to the Criterion Hotel. This caused the licensee of the Criterion to object to the new license:

Christian Jorgensen, Victoria Hotel. Sergeant Bolger said the present applicant had erected a new house adjoining another. The police had no objection. Christian Moser objected, as he had purchased the house formerly conducted by the applicant, who had built alongside of him- Granted.[2]
