Victoria Street
Victoria Street is a street in Ballarat, Victoria.

The street is about 2.4km in length, running northeast from Humffray Street south to Fussell Street.

Work began on the road in May 1855:
New Road.— The surveyors have been at work laying out a new line of road from Melbourne to this place. The survey would lead to the supposition that the line will start from the Main Road at the foot of Bakery Hill past our office and the Prince Albert Hotel. For some time past there has been a great want of a better approach from the Melbourne side than we had. The projected line is much needed, the sooner it is opened the better.[1]
In June 1855 the state of the road was causing concern:
Our main thoroughfares are in a very bad state, and the New Road is if possible the worst of all, this road is at present a track of liquid mud, here and there diversified with large chasms which if not immediately cared for, bid fair to render the road useless. It is a shame that the contractor for the maintenance of the road is neglecting his duty.[2]
The street was named Victoria Road in 1858, after Queen Victoria. It had earlier been known as Melbourne Road.[3]
