History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was destroyed by fire on 8 August 1889:

The View Hotel, well known in olden days as the Bush Inn, was totally destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. The building, which was situated on the Buninyong-road, about 4 miles from Ballarat, belonged to Messrs. Tulloch and M'Laren, brewers, of Ballarat, and it was occupied by Mr. Arthur Rennie. The landlord was aroused from his slumbers by the cries of a cat in the passage of the house, and on rising and opening the door he found the central portion of the premises on fire. With difficulty Mr Rennie, being minus a leg, jumped through the window and alarmed his wife and child, who were sleeping in an adjoining apartment. The hotel was insured, as was also the furniture, it is not known how the fire was caused.[1]
