Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was demolished in April 1879:

The famous old Washington hotel at Browns, and which is mixed up many reminiscences, is now a thing of the past. Here was Cobb's booking office in the early days, and here the leasers and anti-leasers of 1859 used to assemble to determine their [??]operation. The armed force that arrived from Mebourne (writes our Smythesdale correspondent) to put down the rioters, as they were called, also made it there headquarters. The Great Britain, and other claims were then yielding gold by the hundredweight, but now Ichabod is everywhere conspicuous in the locality, and the owner of the Washington - until some months ago tenanted as a hotel - having been sued for rates which the tenants fro time to time, he contends, ought to pay, has pulled down the historic, colonially speaking, old building, which is being carted to some Ballarat timber-yard, to be further utilised, no doubt.[2]
