William Burt Burn was a publican in Clunes, <1886-1902.

History[edit | edit source]

Burt held the license for the Club Hotel in Fraser Street, Clunes from at least August 1886.[1][2] He held the license until about 1902.

In August 1886 he was fined:

W. B. Burn of the Club hotel, under the 107th Clause of the Act, for neglecting to lock all doors, of the bar during prohibited hours; fined £5 and 7s 6d costs. Both of the above cases occurred on the night of the 10th August, on which occasion the Catholic ball was held in the Town Hall, some of the patrons of which had prevailed upon the landlords to supply them with drinks, hence this action. As a rule both hotels are well conducted.[1]

In June 1894 Burn transferred the license of the Station Hotel to T. J. Fryer.[3] Fryer was moving from the Farmers' Hotel.

He died on 19 July 1904:

CLUNES. DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT. Mr W. B. Burn, a very old resident of Clunes, and who was licensee of the Club hotel until failing health compelled him to relinquish the business about two years ago, died at the residence of his nephew, Mr T. Burn, on Sunday night. The deceased had never married. He had a lengthy career as a hotelkeeper in the town, and was highly- respected by the residents and travelling public. He was a member of the local Masonic lodge, and for many years occupied a seat on the hospital committee. The funeral will take place this afternoon.[4]

He is buried in the Clunes Cemetery.[5]
