Gilbert held the license for the Stork Hotel in Armstrong Street, Ballarat.

He died in January 1887:

GILBERT.—On the 13th January, at his residence, Stork Hotel, William Lyle Gilbert: aged 44.[1]

After his death, his wife Emma, took over the hotel:

Mrs Gilbert, of the Stork hotel, in returning thanks for the liberal patronage accorded her since the death of her late husband, notifies that she intends to carry on the business, and asks a continuance of their favors.[2]
